"Five Times A Day" Featured at American Muslim Futures Exhibit
“Five Times A Day”, a short film shot on 16mm by Maryam Mir is one of the multiple exhibits featured in the American Muslim Futures, a platform for Muslim and allied/aligned artists across the country to connect and showcase visions of a better tomorrow. Through digital programs and exhibits, American Muslim Futures pairs the creativity of multidisciplinary artists with the conviction of civil rights advocates to realize new civic futures where all Americans live free from hate and discrimination.
Ali plays a food cart vendor in New York attempting to find a moment of spiritual transcendence in the midst of the daily hustle and bustle of New York City. Inspired by Muslim food cart vendors in NYC who pray beside their carts, this film presents prayer as normal, mundane, and sometimes frustratingly inconvenient amid the cacophony of metropolitan life. It counters the narrative of public prayer as unusual in America and celebrates the beautiful normalcy of Muslim acts of faith.
